Help: Macbook vs PC

Okay, I want to buy a laptop, and must admit that I am totally stuck on this Mac vs Windows debate. I'm trying to do some research and need a push in the right direction - which I was hoping someone here could help me out with.

Basically, I want a Macbook - so pretty, so not Microsoft etc, but am worried that I am being seduced by the pretty. I'm not so level-headed when it comes to gadgets. My extreme techno-joy* seems to get in the way.

I need something to run all basics + photo editing and design applications. I'm unlikely to be editing movies, so the 13" macbook screen seems fine to me. Also, anyone have much experience with iWork? Any good?

So how about it, guys: Macbook vs PC?

P.S. I don't have the cash to get the Macbook Pro, and don't know if that impacts on the debate at all, but I thought I should mention it before I get 20 comments pushing the thing I can't have.

Hey Katie

There is no need to be caught between the two. With a MacBook (the MacBooks are pretty cool laptops so there is no real need to go for the expensive MacBook Pro - just make sure you get one of the new version MacBooks released in the last few weeks) you can run Windows and Mac OS.

You can run Windows using Bootcamp that I believe comes with the Mac. Otherwise if you just run the Mac operating system you can still use Microsoft Office (there is a version of Microsoft Office for the Mac). I use iWork and it is pretty good although not as feature-rich as Microsoft Office. An alternative to Microsoft Office is NeoOffice which is a port of OpenOffice to the Mac operating system.

I would say go for the MacBook and if you prefer to work in Windows you can do that too. I hear there are issues with Windows Vista so you may want to use XP instead but chat to the Apple people about that.

I'm so keen for my new machine - but a little panicky that I am making the right decison because it is sooo expensive. I really appreciate the advice.

Greetings. The price debate of Macs is closing down with comparable hardware now. The 1,299 macbook is comparable to the 1,199 Dell XPS where the Macbook has a faster processer, slightly larger screen and n wireless.

The price differences of Macs and PCS is varied by the fact that you can get "low-end" PCs and Apple limits their selections and you can't "downgrade" often to get a lower price. So compare you specs directly and see what you need.

Macbooks are speedy, light and great. If iPhoto will be good enough for your photo editing, you are good, if not Photoshop elements can be had for around $90, and of course there is always the possibility to grab parallells for $80 and get a copy of windows to load up if absolutely necessary.

A Macbook is well worth the money for good hardware, great software, and the Mac experience in my personal opinion. A similar PC in specs will cost you a very similar amount in the laptop category.

*Cough* Sorry. I see you are in Britain. Not sure if my price comparisons hold true over the pond.

Good luck.

Snuffti-possum...I bought a macbook and its lovely. Really portable and such (ie I can put it in my slingbag and there's no worries, although it is heavier than it looks). THe OSX takes a while to get used to, but I find it nicer than the Windows stuff...you can even go el cheapo like me and use opensource software for your office stuff and its basically as good.

A couple of criticisms from my side:
- There's only two usb ports and they're quite close together, so sometimes this can be limiting
- There isn't a port for connecting to most data projectors
- The speakers aren't as loud as I'd want them to be.

A big plus from my side is the battery life - the other day I got about 5 hours out of it...really really worth it.

Plus, and this is the girl in me, its really really pretty! :)

Janty-pie!
I know: soooo pretty...
I want one so badly - but first I have to pay off the credit card and then get one - so not for a few more months...sigh!
